A comment on the obligatory twitter reference – playing golf a couple weeks back with a 45 year old massage therapist who seemed completely out of touch…I pulled out my phone to write a quick email and he says, “you tweetin’ away over there!?” I asked him if he knew what twitter was and he said, “yes, my ex-wife just signed up for it – I think she beat CNN, but only by a few hours.” I fell over laughing.

What it comes down to is that time spent in front of TVs is shrinking – people are spending more time in front of computers/phones. For TV to regain an audience – it needs to add the interactivity we’ve come to expect from our devices.

I saw this technology (widgetized TV) on Verizon Fios boxes a little while back and it really is the future.

Having your weather, stocks, (obligatory twitter reference:) twitter stream, email, etc. will make “watching” TV more desirable, and get people back in front of the tube.
